WEEK4 - Summary

I managed to deploy the Microsoft Server 2008 instance and launched IIS. The server returns a default webpage when accessing it's IP address via http port.

I have been adding some real timetables data from the First Group website into my prototype MSSQL database.

WEEK3 - Summary

The third week I spent mostly on thinking of a proper database structure. I came up with 6 basic entities: Company, Timetable, Route, Station, RouteStop, RouteStopTime. At the end the RouteStop entity appeared to contain redundant information and was dropped.

Virtual server was prepared and I got the access information today.

WEEK2 - Summary

This week I was researching the possibilities in Java/C# and made a decision to build the project as a Web Service on Microsoft Windows Server. I asked Colin Beagrie (the System Administrator on RGU) for a virtual server to be provided by school.

WEEK1 - Summary

The first week I spent mostly by researching possibilities of technology in the field of online applications.

I borrowed 2 books on the topic of Web Services:

JAVA WEB SERVICES ARCHITECTURE (McGovern, Tyagi, Stevens, Mathew)

Java Web Services for Experienced Programmers (DEITEL Developer Series)

The final structure of the working project should be based on client => web service communication, which will be based on interchanging XML data by SOAP.

I researched OpenStreetMap.org as a possible data source for GPS data in connection with GeoNames, however, GeoNames started providing more accurate data as a Premium service. Hence, I would like to use Google Maps with Geolocation API.

The algorithm used for searching the most optimal path (connection) will be the Dijkstra algorithm:

First meeting w/project supervisor - WEEK 1

Today, we had the first meeting with my project supervisor. We put together a list of tasks for the next Monday's meeting:
